In a mystifying attempt at “outreach,” a taxpayer funded municipal health department has decorated park trees with…condoms and lube.

Keeping with Austin’s penchant for finding senseless and crass ways to spend public money, Austin’s taxpayer-funded Public Health Department is decorating trees in Walnut Creek Park with bags filled with prophylactics and sexual lubricant. The department says the displays are intended to be a unique way to encourage safe sex to a new demographic.

Unique? Well, it certainly is.

It is ironic that a department would engage in such a ridiculous effort in a city that bans plastic bags for normal consumer purposes. Funny enough, Austin’s park department says the practice is considered littering.

What is especially offensive about this effort is the choice of venue. According to the Austin Police Department, Walnut Creek Park is notorious for acts of public indecency.

Over the past few years APD has been forced to investigate and arrest individuals engaging in lewd sexual conduct in the park.

Rather than seek to enforce laws against such behavior, Austin’s Public Health Department is instead undermining law enforcement efforts and using taxpayer resources to help facilitate deviancy.

Though grossly offensive, the move is hardly surprising. Routinely the City subsidizes homosexual pride parades and other fringe groups and activities – all at taxpayer expense.

Keep Austin Gross…or something.
