No conservative in the Texas House is more reviled by the ruling coalition of Democrats and liberal Republicans in the Austin establishment than State Rep. Jonathan Stickland (R-Bedford). He has been their top target because he refuses to cater to their whims and wishes.
They’ve attacked him, threatened him, and made him their top target politically and legislatively.
The result? His constituents love him. Need evidence? A “money bomb” this weekend saw Stickland raise more than $230,000 with the help of more than 400 individuals donors. In a single day. (The funds raised include matching fund challenges from the Empower Texans PAC and others.)
In contrast, most state representatives will show barely a quarter that many individual donors in an entire six-month period.
Stickland told me the contributions were a message.
“Hundreds of Texans sent a message to the establishment yesterday and I am humbled to have been chosen to deliver it: we demand a conservative government.”
And, as demonstrated by Stickland’s money bomb, citizens are willing to support those legislators who work for it.
