Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s state of the state address today offered clear guidance to the lawmakers: keep spending under control, provide tax relief, and make the budget honest.

The governor’s call for stronger constitutional spending limits and a mechanism for providing actual tax relief were welcome news. With other states taking a sober look at their policies, Texas cannot rest on our economic laurels.

Considering the pressures of higher taxes and more regulations being promulgated from DC, it is imperative that the Lone Star State respond by being a beacon of freedom, empowering Texans. Gov. Perry’s emphatic rejection of expanding Medicaid under the terms of ObamaCare reassures Texans that the Lone Star State won’t be an administrator for increasingly unhealthy federal policies.

The formula is simple: by tightly restricting government growth, clamping down on budget gimmicks, and working to reduce tax burdens, Texas will be placed on sure economic footing to the benefit of all Texans.
