Texans have always been willing to not only stand on principle, but fight for it as well. Our past is filled with a myriad of examples where Texans proved that those willing to carry the banner of liberty can persevere against all odds.
We’re all familiar with what happened on October 2, 1835 when near the banks of the Guadalupe River, eighteen rebellious Texans refused to give up their cannon at Gonzales. “Come and Take It” they declared, inasmuch defining the spirit of Texas in one solitary act. The Mexican army of course tried to seize the cannon, but failed.
The movement towards freedom was not easy, as any campaign for liberty rarely is. Yet, in 1836 Texas won its independence.
The crossroads our country currently finds itself at is one unparalleled in American history, yet we Texans are not so different from the “Old Eighteen.”
Texas has been presented with another opportunity to prove once more that we have the prowess and the perseverance to lead. Continual gridlock in D.C. ensures that systemic reform and progress will have to be made at the state level.
Although times have been tough across our country with an unemployment rate still hovering around 8 percent and thousands of Americans dropping out of the workforce altogether, there is still reason to hope.
Americans across the country are searching for an answer to the question of how we can fix anything, when everything seems to be going wrong. Texas can be that answer.
With the rest of the country slipping further into recession, residents are fleeing failing states and flocking to Texas at a rate of almost a thousand a day.
As our good friend Josh Treviño at TPPF put it:
“If the world comes to America to find liberty, then Texas is where Americans come to find liberty.”
But Texas can be better, and voters have shown they are willing. Unfortunately, even in the conservative bastion of Texas, we often find too many lawmakers don’t deliver the legislative punch they promise during campaigns.
While running for office, voters are sold conservative reforms – like zero-based budgeting, ending the margins tax and limiting spending – only to see them die from neglect when legislators and leadership fail to deliver.
It’s not enough to blindly place our liberty and prosperity in the hands of the legislature. We must actively defend and promote the conservative reforms we want to see through participation and accountability.
The fight will be difficult and feelings will get hurt. But the go-along-to-get-along has gotta go.
We must find in ourselves the same Texas spirit that drove those men to courageously say “Come and Take It” and make it our own.

Today we are proud to announce the official launch of our 1836 Campaign. Its purpose: to fund our Accountability Project in the coming legislative session.
The Accountability Project will provide voters with real-time information about their legislators’ record as well as the tools necessary to effectively engage their elected officials. For some legislators it will mean us reporting on promises kept. For others, it will be revealing the discrepancy between their at-home rhetoric and in-Austin reality.
The 1836 Campaign is your opportunity to contribute directly to an effort that empowers citizens by keeping them informed and armed with the truth!
With your help, we will have the ability to impact nearly every legislative district in 2013.
