U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Houston division has deported a Honduran illegal alien wanted by his government.

40-year-old Nery Otoniel Chavez Puerto was discovered by immigration officers from ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Harlingen at Segovia State Jail in September 2022 after being arrested for criminal trespassing. Soon after being convicted of criminal trespassing, he was given over to ERO Harlingen. In November 2022, he was released on parole, according to a press release from ICE.

In January 2024, an immigration judge with the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review ordered that Puerto, although absent from the hearing, be deported back to Honduras.

Puerto was found by ERO Houston in July at the Brazoria County Jail after he had been detained there. Upon coming into custody with ERO Houston, a series of criminal background checks were conducted, and Puerto was found to be wanted by the Honduran government for rape and aggravated robbery.

He was flown back to Honduras by ICE and was handed over to Honduran authorities.

The date and location of Puerto’s illegal crossing is unknown.

Acting field office director for ERO Houston Gabriel Martinez stated, “By working closely with our area law enforcement partners, we are able to more effectively and efficiently locate foreign fugitives hiding in Southeast Texas and repatriate them to their country of origin, where they can be held accountable for their alleged crimes.”

This is not the first illegal immigrant wanted by their government that ICE has deported. As previously reported by Texas Scorecard, Lina Elizabeth Chilel Bail, a Guatemalan woman who crossed the U.S-Mexican border illegally, was wanted by her government for child abuse and was deported in July.
