In the crowded 15-way race for Texas’ 22nd Congressional District in the Houston area, one candidate is touting a high-profile endorsement.

Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (KY) has endorsed Kathaleen Wall, a businesswoman and member of the State Republican Executive Committee, for the position.

Paul, who has served as the junior United States senator from Kentucky since 2011, is perhaps best known in the chamber for his “penny plan,” a proposal to cut 1 percent across the board in the federal budget with the eventual goal of eliminating the national deficit. Wall promised to support the plan in accepting his endorsement.

“Proud to have the endorsement of Senator Rand Paul,” said Wall. “We are both unwavering supporters of President Trump and fighters for liberty. And when I am elected to Congress, I will fight hard for his Penny Plan to cut government spending.”

Wall is joined in the Republican primary by 14 other candidates, including Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls and Pierce Bush. Nehls has been under attack for his opposition to the state’s law banning sanctuary cities for illegal aliens, while Bush has been forced to confront his recent history of attending anti-Trump rallies and comments comparing Catholics to the Taliban.

Early voting continues this week, with Election Day on March 3.
