According to voting records, a Houston energy lawyer seeking to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz in next year’s Republican primary was a registered Democrat in New York.

The 36-year-old Stefano de Stefano told the Houston Chronicle that he registered as a Democrat for pragmatic reasons but – trust him – he’s really a “free market Republican.” He moved to Texas in 2012; the only record of him voting in a Republican primary is 2016.

There is no record of Stefano having contributed time or money to any Republican candidate for office since moving to the Lone Star State.

Cruz is also guaranteed to be challenged by a Democrat in the general election. El Paso US Rep. Robert Francis O’Rourke (who reportedly gave himself the Hispanic nickname “Beto”) has announced his intention to run against Cruz rather than seek re-election.
