Another Democrat is joining the crowded field of candidates hoping for a shot at a U.S. Senate seat in 2020.
Midland City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem John B. Love III filed paperwork last week with the Federal Elections Commission indicating he plans to mount a primary campaign seeking the Democrat Party’s nomination to run for the seat currently held by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R).
Love is also head of the Texas Municipal League (TML), a taxpayer-funded group representing the interests of local government officials that lobbies against pro-taxpayer policies in the Texas Legislature.
This past legislative session, TML opposed several conservative efforts to limit the growth of government, including property tax reform, ending forced annexation, and a ban on taxpayer-funded lobbying.
The League drew criticism earlier this year when a TML representative gave a training presentation to a group of city officials entitled “Shaking the Money Tree,” referring to taxpayers as the “money tree.”
According to a news report, Love will automatically resign his seat when he makes a public announcement for his Senate candidacy. A provision in the Texas Constitution commonly called “resign to run” (Art. 16, Sec. 65), requires that certain public officials resign their office automatically in certain circumstances when they declare candidacy for another office.
Love joins six other Democrats seeking their party’s nomination for U.S. Senate.
