President Donald Trump is continuing to make history, this time becoming the first United States president to address the March for Life, an annual pro-life rally in Washington D.C. that originated as a protest against Roe v. Wade in 1974.
In the past, Republican presidents—from George Bush to Ronald Reagan—have not attended the rally in person, instead choosing to address the event by video.
But Trump is throwing custom to the wind, tweeting that he would attend the event and expects a “big crowd.”

It is not the first time this administration has participated in the rally, however. Vice President Mike Pence made a surprise appearance at last year’s rally, and Trump addressed the group by satellite.
“We are deeply honored to welcome President Trump to the 47th annual March for Life. He will be the first president in history to attend, and we are so excited for him to experience in person how passionate our marchers are about life and protecting the unborn,” said Jeanne Mancini, the president of March for Life.
“From the appointment of pro-life judges and federal workers to cutting taxpayer funding for abortions here and abroad to calling for an end to late-term abortions, President Trump and his administration have been consistent champions for life, and their support for the March for Life has been unwavering. We are grateful for all these pro-life accomplishments and look forward to gaining more victories for life in the future,” she added.
This year’s march is scheduled to take place on Friday, January 24.
