With months to go, Houston’s mayoral election has kept watchers engaged early on. And with one candidate receiving a high-power endorsement, it is sure to remain energetic for the next eight months.
Today, mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee received the endorsement of Secretary of Energy and former Texas Governor Rick Perry, according to the Tony Buzbee campaign.
“He has what it will take to shake up Houston City Hall,” read the endorsement on Buzbee’s Facebook page.
Perry hasn’t been a stranger to endorsements since leaving office; he also issued endorsements in last year’s Republican Primary.
Buzbee and Perry have a history.
Perry appointed Buzbee to the Texas A&M Board of Regents in 2013, and the following year Buzbee represented Perry in an abuse-of-power case. The case stemmed from the fallout of disgraced former Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg’s arrest and guilty plea to drunk driving.
In response to the endorsement, Buzbee said, “I haven’t sought and won’t seek endorsements. This is just something he did. Of course, he and Anita are friends so I really appreciate it.”
“I’m running a nonpartisan race. I’m proud that I am supported by Democrats and Republicans, libertarians and independents,” Buzbee added. “What is most gratifying is that many who have never voted tell me they intend to vote because I am a candidate.”
