Today, former Keller City Councilman Armin Mizani announced his intention to run for mayor on a platform of making Keller “Texas’ most family friendly city,” as well as being taxpayer friendly.
“To do this, it will require a collective effort between our residents, city leaders, Keller ISD, and the business community,” Mizani wrote in a statement. “We must continue to improve our roads and sidewalks, improve our parks-and-trails system, keep Keller safe, work collaboratively with school officials, create an environment that is business friendly, and we must follow through on our promise to protect taxpayers.”
“Above all else, we must establish Keller as a City that puts the needs of its residents above petty politics,” he added.
Mizani said he made his decision to run after serious consultations with “neighbors and community leaders whose opinions I trust and respect.”
This year, Keller aims to join the property tax revolution sweeping North Texas. City officials are proposing a tax rate below the “effective” rate, which would result in a reduction of almost 1 percent in the average homeowner’s city property tax bill. Mizani’s campaign platform suggests he wants to continue a pro-taxpayer path for city government.
Mizani, an attorney, served on Keller City Council from 2014-2018. While in office, he focused on reducing homeowners’ property tax burdens, proposed and helped pass an increase to the city’s homestead exemption, and authored stronger ethics policies for Keller officials and staff. In March 2018, he unsuccessfully challenged incumbent State Rep. Giovanni Capriglione in the Republican primary to represent Texas House District 98.
The election for mayor and Keller City Council Places 5 and 6 will occur in May 2020.
