After endorsing Hollywood Park mayor Chris Fails in his campaign against State Rep. Lyle Larson (San Antonio) in the Republican primary, Gov. Greg Abbott has doubled down on his campaign against the incumbent lawmaker.
While his video on Monday announcing the endorsement centered on Fails and his commitment to conservative policies like property tax reform, Abbott has since turned his focus to Larson himself.
In an interview on KTSA radio in San Antonio, Abbott rebuked Larson for his liberal record:
[Larson] is repeatedly categorized as one of the most liberal people in the state legislature who categorizes himself as a ‘Republican’. Lyle Larson has been a repeat failure in carrying forward the agenda of the republican party. It is offensive that he goes out and claims he is a Republican because he has fought against decreasing property taxes.
Abbott then went on list other conservative priorities, like spending limits, ethics reform, and reigning in government regulations that Larson has repeatedly stood in the way of since serving in the legislature:
Lyle Larson is a proven liberal when it comes to policies here in the state of Texas and he simply must be removed from office. Or, if he wants to run for office, fine, he should just call himself the Democrat that he is.
Since entering the legislature in 2010, Larson has earned failing grades on the Fiscal Responsibility Index, most recently earning a 40, only a few points higher than some Democrats.
