One of the state’s newest grassroots Republican clubs is hitting the ground running to engage Hispanic voters heading into the November election, with popular conservative speakers helping deliver their message.

On Monday night, the Hispanic Republican Club of North Texas presented Pastor Rafael Cruz, a fixture on the campaign trail for his son U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and a dynamic speaker on conservative Christian values and issues.

“America is the greatest country on earth,” Cruz told the crowd at the club’s second meeting, adding he doesn’t believe in “hyphenated” Americans but considers himself “an American who was born in Cuba.”

Cruz said the greatest thing about America is the dream. We need to get government out of the way, he said, and let people work for and achieve their dreams — a conservative Republican value that’s at odds with the socialist leanings of today’s Democrat Party.

He noted that Hispanic unemployment is at an all-time low.

Cruz stressed the importance of supporting conservative candidates in November and the impact the election will have on issues from the economy to life to Supreme Court justices. He encouraged continued outreach to Hispanics, who he says share many conservative values.

Club President Maria Garcia agrees with Cruz. “I want to educate the Hispanic community on how the political system works, so they can get involved and make a difference,” Garcia told Texas Scorecard. “I believe they are mostly conservative at heart.”

Conservative talk radio host Chris Salcedo spoke at HRCNT’s inaugural meeting in September. Salcedo, known as the “Liberty-Loving Latino,” also serves as executive director of the Conservative Hispanic Society.

The HRCNT focuses on advocating, educating, and promoting the values of the Republican platform in the Hispanic community. The club meets at Collin County GOP headquarters in Plano on the fourth Monday of the month.

Cruz will be back in Plano next month, speaking at the Asian Republican Club of North Texas on October 4.
