While our organization has not decided to endorse in “party” races – state chairmanship, national committee, executive committee – we recognize that these positions have tremendous potential to shape of public policy and encourage greater participation by citizens in the governing process.

In particular, the chairmanship of the state’s Republican Party is at the head of one of the largest political organizations in the nation. Nearly two-thirds of Texans vote Republican, and the GOP primary had 2.8 million participants — compared to 1.4 million voting Democrat.

To that end, we have invited the candidates for the chairmanship of the Republican Party of  Texas to answer a questionnaire related to the office. Their answers will be published – in full, without editing – in a special print edition of the Texas Scorecard, and in our regular online edition, ahead of the 2016 state GOP convention in Dallas.

The chairmanship is decided on by delegates to the convention.

The 2016 GOP Chairman questionnaire sent to the candidates can be downloaded for review as a PDF document.

Two candidates have announced their intention to run for the chairmanship at the GOP convention: incumbent Tom Mechler, who was appointed to the post in 2015, and Jared Woodfill, former chairman of the Harris County GOP.
