Norman Grimes Jr.’s strong summer continued in Iowa, with the Canyon High School alumnus setting a new Texas Tech track record.

Competing in the USATF Championships on July 27 in Des Moines, Grimes recorded a time of 48.68 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, which broke his own TTU standard in the event, Texas Tech’s website reported. His previous best mark – and the program’s – was 48.71 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, an effort that got him second place nationally. He had his sixth finish this season faster than 50 seconds in the event’s semifinals.

On July 25, Grimes finished in 50.20 in a first-round race in the event.

The 400 hurdles has been a signature event for Grimes since his time at Canyon, when he was ranked No. 1 in the event both nationally and worldwide for the class of 2016. He also was the 2015 World Youth Champion in the event.
