Tristen Bayless, a former star pitcher at Hutto High School and current University of Houston Cougar, shined in summer league play.

Bayless was named the Valley Baseball League Pitcher of the Year while playing for the Woodstock (Virginia) River Bandits, UH’s website reported.

Bayless, a left-handed pitcher, went 3-2 with a 1.93 earned-run average for Woodstock. He also averaged 13.8 strikeouts per nine innings and allowed opponents to bat only .156 against him in 32⅔ innings.

Last season, Bayless made 14 appearances for the Cougars, pitching 5⅔ innings with seven strikeouts, four hits and 10 walks allowed, and a 7.94 ERA. He previously pitched at McLennan Community College and for Texas A&M.

At Hutto, Bayless won Texas Sportswriters Association 5A All-State recognition, both as an outfielder (second team) and pitcher (honorable mention) after his senior year, as well as being MVP of District 17-5A.
