Texas Christian University senior sprinter Derrick Mokaleng, a native of South Africa, will compete at the 12th Annual African Games from Aug. 26-30.

Organizers expect the games, held in Rabat, Morocco, to draw 7,000 competitors in more than two dozen sports. The competition feeds Olympic hopefuls in 15 categories, according to a TCU press release. Mokaleng will contend in two races: the 400 meter and 4×400 relay.

Mokaleng grew up in Johannesburg and earned a TCU record for the outdoor 400 meter race and a second-place ranking for the indoor version.

“I’m going into the African Games confident and ready to bring home a gold medal,” Mokaleng said in the release.

Calling the chance for Mokaleng to represent his home country a “great experience,” head coach Darryl Anderson also said in the release, “It’ll also help prepare him for the world championships.”
