Junior quarterback Shane Buechele barely missed a beat in recently returning to the Texas Longhorns starting lineup, throwing for nearly 200 yards and sparking the team to a 23-17 win over Baylor.

But none of that is what impressed coach Tom Herman most about the former Lamar High star.

“I don’t think there was any doubt in anybody’s mind how prepared he was because we watch him every day,” Herman told the Daily Texan after installing Buechele back into the Texas lineup as a replacement for injured starter Sam Ehlinger. “And what an unbelievable teammate he has been, especially considering, you know, what’s gone on other places in the country.”

Former Clemson star Kelly Bryant recently made national headlines by bolting the program after being demoted to the second team.

Before the Baylor game, Buechele hadn’t played since last season’s Texas Bowl. Afterward, he thanked teammates for again putting him the position to excel.

“I want to say thank you to everybody in this room, man,” Buechele said. “Y’all having my back and trusting in me when stuff happens, I just love y’all.”

Herman returned all the love.

“I will do whatever I can for you for the rest of your life because of how you’ve handled everything since I’ve been here,” he said.
