We can all agree: Europe is a disaster. Their collective economy is in shambles thanks to a ludicrous devotion to debt-financed big-government nanny-statism. It took them 30 years to reach such dizzying depths. Barack Obama’s failed administration has quadrupled our national debt in a year, shoved individual health care mandates down our throats, and diminished America’s standing in the world. And now Bill White cannot wait to bring the same policies into Texas.

Bill White’s current television ad is called “Man on the Move.” Appropriate: he’s moving as fast as he can from the fiscal stink bomb he unleashed on Houston. Bill White gave the European illusion of prosperity by selling the city’s fiscal soul.

The dire situation isn’t lost on city comptroller-turned-mayor, Annise Parker, who told the Houston Chronicle: “For years now, we have spent more money than we have taken in … You can’t spend more than you earn. It is a very unbusinesslike approach to running things.”

Bill White (a trail lawyer who pretends to be a businessmen) has moved on, leaving Houstonians left to pay the proverbial devil.

Mr. White falsely claims to have cut property taxes in Houston. What tripe! Like so many other big-government types in municipal government, he let unrestrained, unaccountable appraisal creep push property tax bills higher and higher.

Like his partisan cronies in the Euro-cratic Party of Obama, Mr. White is congenitally incapable of controlling spending.

And this is where the sheer hypocrisy of the left shines brightest. Texas’ conservative leaders have cut spending here. In both 2003 and again in 2009 the state’s “general revenue” spending budget did go down; they shrunk what they could shrink.

You may not like what they cut, or what the federal government made the state spend money on, but GR spending did decline. Bill White’s solution would apparently have been to hike government revenues and spend even more beyond that. It’s clearly what he did to Houston.

Texas has remained economically viable, stronger than the rest of the nation, principally because Texans have categorically rejected the Obama-White philosophy of government.

Even as the policies of big-government have clearly hobbled Europe, American leftists are doing an even speedier job in Washington plunging America down the path of generational decline and cultural implosion. Now more than ever we must keep Wily Bill White, and his Obamanization of Texas, as far away from state government as possible.
