Yesterday Texans for Fiscal Responsibility mailed each member of the Texas House highlighting legislation filed for the 82nd Session that exemplifies limited government and fiscal responsibility.
The “Priority Legislation” featured includes bills and joint resolutions that aim to strengthen the constitutional spending limit, protect taxpayers, reform the gross margins tax, advance tax reforms protecting veterans and active duty service members, limit government overreach, and promote integrity in government. Because these pieces of legislation are central examples of public policy designed to enhance freedom and prosperity for all Texans, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility will feature them in our Fiscal Responsibility Index.
As you know, the Fiscal Responsibility Index serves as a measurement of how lawmakers perform on issues related to taxes and spending, size and scope of government, and related free market issues. As we have done in previous Sessions, legislators signing on to legislation in the “priority” categories will receive additional positive weightings on the Fiscal Responsibility Index – improving their ratings. Choosing not to sign on to any of the “priority” legislation will have no negative impact on a lawmaker’s overall score on the Index.
But indexes and scorecards can’t do much to ensure the production of good policy; your legislators need to hear from you! Take this opportunity to tell your representative to support the legislation important to you!
Other pieces of legislation will no doubt be added to the “priority” category as the Session progresses, but as they are we will continue to post notices about legislation and votes subject for scoring on the Index. For example, we have not yet added Senate bills to the list — though there are some great items there.
You can find the most up to date list of “Priority Legislation” HERE.
