After Allen West announced his resignation as chair of the Republican Party of Texas, former State Rep. Matt Rinaldi is throwing his hat into the ring.

Rinaldi made the announcement official in a series of tweets on Friday afternoon, in which he said the party needed a chair “willing to stand strong for the party and ensure that grassroots don’t lose their voice in the political process.”

“The party also needs a leader with a history of raising money and organizing party activists at the local level, who is also committed to its mission and legislative priorities. I look forward to earning the support of the SREC over the coming weeks,” he added.

Rinaldi was among the most conservative lawmakers in the Texas House, where he served from 2015-2019.

Members of the State Republican Executive Committee will select the next chair of the party during a special meeting on July 11.
