Over the weekend, Gov. Greg Abbott signed an executive order banning all unnecessary medical procedures in an effort to make more resources available to fight the Chinese coronavirus and save lives.

Now it appears the order may save even more lives than originally thought, as the state’s top lawyer confirms that abortions must stop as well.

In an announcement on Monday afternoon, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton warned all medical professionals, including abortionists, that they must postpone all surgeries and procedures that are not immediately medically necessary.

“We must work together as Texans to stop the spread of COVID-19 and ensure that our healthcare professionals and facilities have all the resources they need to fight the virus at this time,” said Paxton. “No one is exempt from the governor’s executive order on medically unnecessary surgeries and procedures, including abortion providers. Those who violate the governor’s order will be met with the full force of the law.”

The news was celebrated by pro-life organizations in Texas, including Texas Right to Life, the oldest pro-life organization in Texas.

“Pro-Life Texans have been appalled that the abortion industry has continued killing preborn children during the outbreak while statewide and local orders have recommended they close,” Texas Right to Life said ahead of the official announcement. “Furthermore, the abortion industry has been consuming and hoarding medical supplies that are in desperate need around the state, including masks, gloves, and other protective gear for medical professionals.”

“Texas Right to Life is grateful that the loss of life during the COVID-19 outbreak will be decreased thanks to the halt in abortions.”

The executive order is set to last until April 21, unless it is extended or shortened. According to Texas Right to Life’s projections, that could mean as many as 2,868 lives saved. However long the emergency prohibition ultimately lasts, Texans can take some solace that many preborn lives will be saved as a result.
