One Dallas Democrat lawmaker could be in for a tough 2020 election if recently released campaign finance reports are any indication.
In 2018, State Rep. John Turner (D–Dallas) beat out Republican candidate Lisa Luby Ryan in the Beto O’Rourke-driven “blue wave” in Dallas County to take the seat formerly held by Jason Villalba.
Campaign fundraising by Luisa Del Rosal, who is the only Republican to enter the race so far, shows that Turner may be in for fierce competition. Since she entered the race in May, Rosal has raised over $170,000 with cash on hand, totalling above $150,000—an impressive showing for the first-time candidate.
Turner’s report reveals that he raised just over $35,000; however, due to the blackout period prohibiting fundraising during and around the legislative session by incumbent lawmakers, Turner had a shorter time to raise funds. His cash on hand totals nearly $210,000.
“I’m overwhelmed by the response my candidacy has received from our community,” said Rosal on Monday. “My campaign is about protecting the Republican pro-job growth policies that have allowed the Texas economy to prosper. Texas is an exceptional place and, with the help of my dedicated supporters, we will keep it that way.”
Detailed financial reports will continue to be released by the Texas Ethics Commission today and throughout the week.
