Texas A&M Sociology Course Promotes Racial Division

Concepts explored include “microaggressions” and “Eurocentrism.”

Course materials from the Texas A&M sociology department promote a series of racially divisive concepts, including “Asian hate,” “Algorithmic bias,” “microaggressions,” and Eurocentrism.

Texas Scorecard has obtained presentation slides from two in-class presentations from “Sociology 217: Race and Ethnicity.” Materials covered include “Prejudice and Discrimination” and “European Colonial History.”

The PowerPoint slides appear to cover classroom discussions from September 4 and September 9. The official course syllabus confirms that those subjects were discussed those days.

The course is taught by Dr. Liangfei Ye, who lists his pronouns in his official Aggie bio as “he/him/his.”

According to the syllabus, on September 4, the class explored various aspects of prejudice and discrimination. Concepts such as “microaggressions,” described as a “type of discrimination,” were discussed alongside “Asian hate” and “algorithmic bias.”

On September 9, the class was scheduled to discuss the historical experiences of Native Americans and African Americans. While much of the material is valid historical discussion, it nevertheless veers into discussions of “eurocentrism” and “devaluating.”

Texas Scorecard previously reported about the “Race and Ethnicity” course Dr.Ye is teaching this fall. The syllabus and course materials instruct students to look at the world through a racialized lens.

The Texas A&M sociology department is chaired by Dr. Jennifer Glanville, who lists her pronouns in her official Aggie biography as “she/her/hers.”

Texas A&M University is part of the Texas A&M System, which is overseen by a Board of Regents that is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Texas Senate.

After revelations of a Texas A&M instructor throwing a student out of class for objecting to promoting transgenderism to minors, on September 9, the Texas A&M University System’s Board of Regents stated Chancellor Glenn Hegar will “audit every course and ensure full compliance with all applicable laws.”
