There is widespread agreement among conservatives that marriage is one of the core pillars of society. Yet, almost half of all first marriages will end in divorce. Additionally, multiple studies have found that half of all divorce cases include at least one party obsessively consuming pornography.

Republicans are now on the offensive against porn after it was revealed that children have access to obscene materials in their school libraries (a position vehemently defended by the Democrat Party).

Although the Republican Party of Texas recognizes pornography as a cultural crisis in Plank #285, very little has been accomplished to address the massive pornography addiction of large swaths of the population, including a quarter of millennials and Gen Z.

In addition to its devastating effects on the family, pornography addiction increases the likelihood of developing mental illness, which spiked when internet usage became widespread. In fact, the National Library of Medicine specifically finds increased levels of depression, anxiety, and social anxiety in adults between 18-25.

Still, many of those victimized by these mental illnesses are children. Children, on average, are first exposed to porn between the ages of 11 and 13. On top of the exacerbated effects porn has on adults, child victims are shown a perversion of intimacy that harms their mental development and the way they view marriage.

However, some are willing to confront the issues of pornography.

J.D. Vance, the Ohio Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, has stated that he would support banning pornography entirely, and many state representatives here in Texas are fighting to remove porn from school libraries. In the 2021 Texas Broadband bill, common-sense porn regulations were introduced by State Rep. Jeff Cason (R–Bedford) to make pornographic content an opt-in function; however, the amendment to include this function was killed by 13 Republican lawmakers.

With Texans focused on pornography (and drag queens) in schools, perhaps Texas conservatives will work to further protect children from the snares of sexual perversion.
