Texas officials are reportedly considering a strategy to speed up the deportation of illegal aliens by busing them directly to Immigration and Customs Enforcement holding centers.
The proposal suggests buses should be used to discourage illegal border crossings instead of routing them to sanctuary cities, a Texas government official told the New York Post.
President-elect Donald Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan said he would be willing to work with Texas to make the plan happen, according to The Post.
Buses chartered by Texas would operate out of border cities and transport illegal aliens to federal deportation centers.
“That’s a way we could be involved in that, and of course they would reimburse us for paying for the [bus] contract,” the source told The Post.
Abbott has not endorsed the proposal, nor did he mention it at his latest trip to the border, though Homan did say he looks forward to discussing the plan.
Abbott did not respond to a request for comment.
Since 2022, Abbott advocated for busing illegal aliens away from border towns to lessen the burden on the overwhelmed towns. Abbott recently announced that Texas has bused nearly 120,000 illegal aliens to sanctuary cities.
The busing effort transported thousands of illegal aliens to large cities like Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, and Los Angeles.
Last month, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham offered a 1,402-acre ranch west of McAllen to Trump for the construction of deportation facilities.
In a letter, Buckingham said she was “fully prepared to enter into an agreement… to allow a facility to be built for the processing, detention, and coordination of the largest deportation of violent criminals in the nation’s history.”
