A well-known grassroots activist will head the Washington office of a newly elected member of Congress. Republican U.S. Rep.-elect Chip Roy announced today he is hiring Joseph Wade Miller to oversee his staff.
“In Washington, the old adage that personnel is policy plays out in real time on a daily basis because members rely on staff to actually identify how to navigate the swamp,” said Roy, who previously served as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s chief of staff. “I know from experience that to be able to honor the people who sent you to Washington to change the status quo, you must have men and women working alongside you who are able and willing to fight … for the people of Texas and not for career advancement or to be liked in the swamp.”
Miller served in the United States Marine Corps and is an infantry combat veteran with multiple deployments, including Iraq and the Horn of Africa. After the Marine Corps and college, he served as a regional coordinator and then senior regional coordinator for Heritage Action for nearly five years. In that position, he monitored the voting records of federally elected officials and became a trusted policy and process analyst for the conservative grassroots. Miller went on to become political director for Cruz.
Roy’s deputy chief of staff will be Maggie Harrell. She began her career as counsel to U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on the Senate Judiciary Committee and later served as counsel to Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas). Prior to her most recent role as the executive director of Roy’s campaign, she held key leadership positions on senate, congressional, and presidential campaigns in Missouri, Iowa, Alaska, Ohio, and Alabama.
Rounding out Roy’s leadership team will be Nathan Craig McDaniel as the district director. While attending Texas State University, McDaniel worked as an intern for State Sen. Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) where he eventually accepted a full-time position as communications director in her Capitol office. He was also the student body president at Texas State during the 2012-2013 school year. Nathan has also previously served as a field director for Americans For Prosperity in Houston.
