Aaron Reitz was sworn in Thursday as the new U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas, assuming leadership of one of the nation’s largest and busiest federal prosecutors’ offices.

Reitz took the oath of office before U.S. District Judge Nicholas Ganjei.

“I’m honored to serve as the chief federal law enforcement officer and lawyer for this mission-critical district,” Reitz said in a statement. “Our office will relentlessly combat violent crime, illegal immigration, drug and human trafficking, corruption, and fraud. We will faithfully uphold the rule of law and protect the public. Things are about to get very bad for criminals in the Southern District of Texas.”

Before taking the post, Reitz served in the U.S. Department of Justice. He previously served as deputy attorney general for legal strategy under Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and as chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.

Earlier this year, Reitz sought the Republican nomination for Texas attorney general, ultimately finishing fourth in the GOP primary.

Paxton praised Reitz’ appointment, calling him “an invaluable asset” during his time in the attorney general’s office.

“I thank him for his strong leadership, which was key to our success in defending our constitutional values and system of government,” said Paxton. “I know Aaron will be an outstanding U.S. Attorney and will serve the Southern District of Texas with integrity and a strong commitment to the rule of law that will undoubtedly advance the cause of justice in our state.”

As U.S. attorney, Reitz will oversee federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigation throughout the Southern District of Texas, which spans 43 counties from Houston to the Rio Grande Valley.
