Donald Trump has promised to impose a 25 percent tariff on all Mexican products on day one of his presidency if Mexico refuses to halt illegal border crossings into the United States.
The former president unveiled the plan at his Monday rally in Raleigh, North Carolina.
“If they [the Mexican government] don’t stop this onslaught of criminals and drugs coming into our country, I’m going to immediately impose a 25 percent tariff on anything they send into the United States of America,” Trump said.
He then promised that the program has a “100 percent chance” of working, because he will continually raise tariff percentages until Mexico decides to cooperate and potentially utilize its military to stop illegal border crossings.
Texas has been plagued by violent illegal aliens for years. At a recent press conference in Austin, Trump called for the death penalty for illegal aliens who murder U.S. citizens.
Throughout his 2024 presidential campaign, the GOP nominee has made a myriad of other immigration-related promises for his first day in office if he wins the election.
For example, at his May rally in Wildwood, New Jersey, he claimed that on day one, his administration will not only seal the border, but he will begin sending “Joe Biden’s illegal aliens” back to their countries of origin.
Trump also announced in June that on the first day of the new administration, he will end automatic citizenship for children born of illegal aliens in the United States.
“I’ve already announced that I will sign on day one an executive order ending automatic citizenship for the children of illegal aliens,” he said. “You have to do it. We’re the only country in the world that does it.”
In early November of last year, Trump asserted at a rally in Hialeah, Florida, that he will also reinstate his “Trump travel ban” on countries where terrorist activity is abundant.
“On day one, we will restore the Trump travel ban on entry from terror-plagued countries, and we will implement strict vetting, ideological screening for all new entrance into our country,” he stated.
National Review reports that the travel ban was first introduced in 2017. At that time, the ban applied to Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, and Yemen. The ban also restricted visas for citizens from North Korea and Venezuela.
After Biden took office, he immediately reversed the ban. Now, Trump is promising to reinstate it.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
