Texas congressmen are supporting a measure that aims to abolish the U.S. Department of Education.

The act, called H.R. 899, was reintroduced by U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) in late January. The entire piece of legislation consists of just one sentence: “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2026.”

Republican lawmakers from around the state of Texas strongly support the measure.

U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-21) was a co-sponsor of the original act during the 118th Congress and has been a long-time contributor to similar efforts.

“Agree completely. It should be abolished,” Roy posted on X. “We were better educated as a nation before it was created. It’s not enumerated. End it.”

Texas U.S. Reps. Jodey Arrington (R-19) and Keith Self (R-3) also co-sponsored the legislation.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education announced on Friday that it will enforce protections under Title IX based on biological sex. The announcement was made in a letter sent to K-12 schools.

The announcement reversed a previous directive from the Biden administration that attempted to rewrite Title IX to include “gender identity” as a protected class.

A federal district court judge recently vacated former President Joe Biden’s efforts to rewrite Title IX.
