The Bexar County Republican Party is arguing billions of local taxpayer dollars should not be spent on a new entertainment center in San Antonio.
Bexar County GOP Chair Kris Coons told Texas Scorecard, “Project Marvel, as currently presented, would promote economic development and bring in tourism, however, it should not take precedence over infrastructure and public safety.”
Precinct chairs on the county GOP executive committee approved a resolution denouncing the project.
Dubbed “Project Marvel” by San Antonio administrators, many of the details were revealed to the city council in November 2024. The project includes a new Spurs arena, with exact price details still hidden.
Yet, Assistant City Manager Lori Houston said that the full project could cost between $3 billion and $4 billion. The Spurs arena alone could cost up to $1.5 billion.
Coons posed the question regarding the entertainment center, “What does it do for the citizens and how does it enhance the quality-of-life day to day for those who are paying for it?”
She highlighted other concerns of citizens, particularly crime.
“With the constant drum beating of defunding the police and treating our officers as the enemy, the city is down 300+ police officers and crime has skyrocketed. Public safety should be a priority.” Coons noted that the jails need renovations and criticized the “liberal progressive DA” for refusing to prosecute, leaving criminals on the streets.
She mentioned that the roads need attention, as does the water system. “This served as a friendly reminder that this is the responsibility of the local governments,” Coons said.
The Bexar County GOP resolution condemns the wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars on the entertainment center.
“The city and county have other more important issues and areas of concern to provide funding for which fall within their purview of providing city services,” the resolution reads. “Be it resolved, we object to any attempt to relocate the San Antonio Spurs to a new arena developed or renovated by public funds.”
“Be it further resolved, that we object to the wasting of public funds to expand the city’s sports and entertainment industry,” it continues.
73 out of 105 precinct chairs approved the resolution.
