A South Texas high school coach caught in a sex solicitation sting is scheduled to be sentenced next month to a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison.
Kenneth Wayne Mulkey, 44, was charged last February with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor after he sent sexually explicit messages and photos via Snapchat to a federal agent he believed was a 14-year-old boy.
At the time of his arrest, Mulkey taught social studies and coached football and track at Sabinal High School in Sabinal Independent School District.
Mulkey pleaded guilty in August 2025 and is now facing 10 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for April 1.
Online records show Mulkey had worked in Sabinal ISD since 2023 and previously taught in Ingram and Hondo ISDs.
Mulkey has held a Texas teaching certificate since 2004. In August 2024, he received a $3,000 bonus for becoming a “Recognized Teacher” under the state’s Teacher Incentive Allotment program.
Mulkey is among hundreds of Texas school employees accused of sex crimes involving students and other children in just the past few years.
Snapchat is identified by name in many cases of educators charged with sexually grooming students and/or creating and distributing child sexual abuse materials. Texas is suing Snapchat’s developer for deceiving parents about the dangers of the app.
