An El Paso teacher has been charged with an improper relationship with a student following an investigation by the El Paso Police Department.

According to El Paso PD, 33-year-old Ryan Anthony Avalos was arrested and charged with the crime, allegedly against an 18-year-old female.

Police did not confirm in which school Avalos taught but did say he was employed with Ysleta Independent School District.

In January, an El Paso police school resource officer was contacted by officials at Eastwood High School who advised him about an alleged improper relationship between a student and Avalos.

Soon after hearing the allegations, the department’s Crimes Against Children unit began to investigate and found that Avalos had started the relationship in early November of 2023.

On March 1, Avalos was charged and booked into El Paso County Detention Center. He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond.

Ysleta ISD confirmed that Avalos was previously employed as a math teacher at Eastwood High School.

“The Ysleta Independent School District can confirm that Ryan Anthony Avalos, a former math teacher at Eastwood High School, is no longer a district employee effective Jan. 30, 2024. Due to confidentiality laws, no other details can be released,” the district told KTSM News. “However, we want to reassure the public that Ysleta ISD follows policy on all personnel matters and will continue working closely with local law enforcement authorities throughout their investigation.”

State records show that Avalos’ teaching certificate is still valid. However, he is currently under review.

Texas Scorecard has exposed dozens of educators charged with sex crimes, with more being charged almost daily.
