A deceptive political action committee in Montgomery County is asking voters to elect a convicted felon.
The Republican Voters of Texas PAC, a group which has no connection to the GOP and has been condemned by the county’s Republican Party for “deceptive electioneering,” lists Splendora resident Greg Long as their endorsed candidate for Precinct 16 chair.
Public records reveal Long is a felon who was convicted of running a timber theft operation in 1998. Long was found guilty of the theft of property valued between $20,000 and $100,000, a third-degree felony.
Long was sentenced to 10 years in prison and assessed restitution in the amount of $105,488. Long’s prison sentence was suspended and he served out his time on probation.
The Republican Voters of Texas PAC was created by a group of establishment Republicans who were unhappy with new bylaws passed in 2018 by the county party’s executive committee, composed of precinct chairs. The new bylaws decentralized power within the party and made it harder for the establishment to have control.
The PAC’s purpose is to unseat precinct chairs who supported the new bylaws and replace them with candidates who will do the GOP establishment’s bidding and return to the system of top-down control under the old bylaws.
Several candidates endorsed by the Republican Voters of Texas PAC have never attended a meeting of the county executive committee, the body they are attempting to join. Many did not even bother to vote in the last Republican primary.
Long is the group’s chosen candidate to take out Walter West, a decorated veteran who is also the state Republican executive committeeman for Senate District 4. West supported the new bylaws, so the Republican Voters of Texas PAC seems to want him out—even if it means electing a felon to Republican Party leadership.
Felons are allowed to vote in Texas after they have fully completed their sentence. A candidate for precinct chair is only required to be an eligible voter residing in the voting precinct.
