A former North Texas church pastor, award-winning school volunteer, and nonprofit leader has been jailed on multiple charges of possessing child sexual abuse material.
Jim Dale Mustain was arrested and charged with one count of possession of more than 50 images or videos of child pornography and four counts of possession or promotion of lewd visual material depicting a child.
Mustain worked as a community pastor at Preston Trail Community Church in Frisco from 2019 to 2023.
Preston Trail leaders wrote in a statement that they learned of Mustain’s impending arrest on April 24 and immediately initiated an internal investigation led by an independent firm.
“There is currently no indication that any children connected to Preston Trail were involved or harmed. Mustain’s role during his time on staff did not include direct responsibilities related to children’s or student ministries,” the church’s senior pastors wrote.
Mustain also volunteered with student groups at Durham Middle School and Creekside Elementary in Lewisville Independent School District, according to a report by Dallas Crime Breaking News. Mustain is now prohibited from accessing any district facilities.
Lewisville ISD also stated there is no evidence that Mustain’s alleged crimes impacted any of their students.
A biography posted on Mustain’s LinkedIn page indicates that he is also the founder and executive director of the North Texas nonprofit Loving Community, which focuses on “being good neighbors” and provides “services to a wide range of individuals from school children to senior adults.”
According to the biography, Loving Community was recognized as the 2016 Nonprofit of the Year in the Lewisville, Flower Mound, and Highland Village communities, and Mustain was voted 2017 Volunteer of the Year by Communities in Schools of North Texas.
Mustain also served on the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce board of directors from 2018 through 2020 and held several other volunteer positions in and around Lewisville and Denton County.
He was booked into the Denton County Jail on May 14 and is being held on a total of $500,000 in bonds—$100,000 for each charge.
Hundreds of Texas public, private, and Christian school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children in just the past few years. A number have also been involved with church groups.
State law requires school employees and some volunteers to undergo background checks.
