Parents in Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District are concerned about an image featured in last year’s yearbook and say the district’s top bureaucrat failed to respond to their complaints.
As photos of the Grapevine High School yearbook, titled “Transform,” made the rounds on social media, many parents voiced their disapproval of a photo depicting former President Donald Trump.
The photo is from “Posty Fest,” a concert put on by Grapevine High School alumni and award-winning musician Post Malone, held November 12, 2019.
One photo of the concert showed an unnamed act in front of a graphic of “Trump” removing his mask, revealing himself to be Adolf Hitler. Behind Hitler appears to be an altered version of the United States flag, with a swastika in place of the 50 stars.
Natalie Genco, a parent from Colleyville, went on the Chris Salcedo Show on June 9 to discuss the photo:
“I found out it wasn’t the current yearbook; it was last year. So, it’s been out there for a year, and apparently parents did not become aware of it. But it’s so disrespectful to a current president, and it was disrespectful to every family who supported that president, which is the majority of our very conservative cities of Grapevine and Colleyville. Parents paid hard-earned money for this yearbook to receive propaganda.”
“I started to post to Facebook, and I started getting parents who were shocked and outraged,” Genco told Salcedo. “They could not believe that the principal had approved this [or that] the yearbook teacher thought it was okay.”
“We found out that parents had complained about it but had heard nothing from our superintendent, so that was even more upsetting,” she added.
Genco said she and others started a Facebook group called GCISD Parents For Strong Schools, where they aim to “refute the lies the district is using our resources to spread.”
“We post all of the information, the open records requests, everything we can. And we not only post it, we allow discussion from both sides to get on so we can get to the truth of what is happening.”
