A teacher and coach in the Mansfield Independent School District is accused of multiple felony sex crimes involving an underage student in another district.

Jared Trevor Young, 33, was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child, possession and transmission of child pornography, and improper relationship between educator and student.

Young is a science teacher and freshman football/basketball coach at Legacy High School.

Legacy High School Principal Stephanie Bonneau notified families Thursday of Young’s arrest following an investigation by the Alvarado Police Department.

She emphasized that the charges do not involve any Mansfield ISD students.

Bonneau said the district immediately placed Young on administrative leave and has notified him of its intent to terminate his employment.

Per district policy, MISD followed its strict hiring protocols in this case, including a thorough criminal background check, employment history verification, and professional references – none of which revealed any concerns of this nature. In addition, employees participate in annual training regarding child abuse and sexual abuse prevention.

This school year is Mr. Young’s first year as a teacher with MISD, but in 2021-2022, he worked as a special education teacher’s aide at Legacy High School. Out of an abundance of caution, MISD administrators will contact the families of students in Mr. Young’s 2021-2022 classroom to inform them of these charges.

“The safety and well-being of our students is always a top priority, and we know this news is concerning,” added Bonneau.

Young has held a Texas teaching certificate since 2020. Online records show he previously taught in Alvarado ISD.

He was booked into the Tarrant County Jail and released Friday morning following a magistration hearing.

In just the past few years, hundreds of Texas educators have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other minors in school districts across the state—including Mansfield ISD.

In 2023, Legacy High School special education aide Diego Barona was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between educator and student. Those charges involved an underage Mansfield ISD student.

Thousands of Texas teachers have been reported for sexual misconduct since the state started keeping organized records in 2021.
