Medina County Republicans have unanimously approved a letter to Texas House members calling for unity in the upcoming speaker race.
The local GOP held an emergency executive meeting last week and approved the letter encouraging support of State Rep. David Cook (R-Mansfield) for speaker of the Texas House.
“As leaders of the Republican Party in our counties, we write to remind you of the trust that voters have placed in our party and the responsibility you bear as their elected representatives,” reads the letter. “As county chairs we fully support the longstanding process that the Texas House has followed in selecting Representative Cook as the Texas Speaker of the House. We therefore support nominating Representative Cook as the Texas Speaker of the House.”
The letter continues calling for unity in the Republican party, noting the MCGOP’s disappointment with many who have not united behind the Republican nominee for speaker.
“Now is the time for unity of our party and it is disappointing that we have a majority in the Texas House and yet we are still divided in the Texas House. We ask that as Donald J. Trump has shown his leadership skills in uniting the Republicans in Washington DC, that you in the Texas House unite as well,” the letter continued.
MCGOP states that the future of the party, the state, and the shared conservative vision depends on Republican House members honoring the caucus process and supporting Cook. It notes that “anything else is unacceptable.”
