A North Texas teacher has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a former student.
Carroll Middle School teacher Angela Dawn Barnes, 45, was arrested by Keller police on Monday. She is being charged with sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between an educator and student.
According to the Keller Police Department, the investigation into Barnes started in late September after they received information about an alleged relationship with the former student. It has been reported that the inappropriate relationship occurred between June and July but has since ended.
At this time, police believe there are no additional victims, but anyone with more information on the matter is asked to contact Detective Brockmoller at wbrockmoller@cityofkeller.com.
Barnes was booked into Keller Regional Jail and is currently under investigation by the Texas Education Agency’s Educator Investigations Division.
Parents report that Barnes previously taught PE in Keller schools. Barnes’ LinkedIn page shows she was a teacher and coach at Keller ISD from 2001 to 2017.
Carroll ISD sent a letter to parents stating the alleged offenses took place off campus, and no incidents have been reported on Carroll ISD campuses.
“Upon learning of these allegations, the District immediately placed the staff member on administrative leave and reported the matter to the appropriate authorities. Carroll ISD is fully cooperating with the Keller Police Department and Child Protective Services as their investigation continues,” wrote the district. “We understand that this news will raise concerns, and we want to assure you that the safety of all Dragons is our top priority.”
Dozens of Texas teachers and school employees have been charged with sex crimes involving students in recent years.
