A North Texas teacher has been accused of sex crimes involving middle school students.
Miguel Angel Caban Mendez, 57, was arrested and charged with two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact, two counts of improper relationship between educator and student, and one count of indecent assault.
Caban taught English as a Second Language at Perry Middle School in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. An arrest affidavit indicated Caban was put on administrative leave then resigned.
According to a report by WFAA, the arrest affidavit states that a student accused Caban of inappropriately touching her, starting by massaging her feet with lotion then escalating to sexual contact.
The student alleged that Caban would pull her out of her class, telling her teacher he needed her for 20 minutes, then have the girl come to his classroom during his off periods. She told investigators this happened sometimes twice a week.
The affidavit states that three other girls were interviewed and told investigators Caban gave them foot massages too.
“There is an active investigation involving a former employee,” a district spokesperson told Texas Scorecard. “The Carrollton Police Department is leading the investigation, and the district is fully cooperating with law enforcement. Please contact Carrollton Police for more information.”
Caban was booked into the Dallas County Jail on March 4. Total bond was set at $330,000.
Online records show Caban had worked for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD since 2021 and previously taught at a Golden Rule Charter School.
Caban has held a Texas teaching certificate since 2020. He is currently under review by the Texas Education Agency’s Educator Investigations Division.
Over the past few years, a growing number of Texas school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children, and thousands have been reported to the TEA for sexual misconduct.
