A school bus driver in Montgomery County is accused of sexually assaulting a child on Thanksgiving Day.

Jonathan Morgan Cranfill, 38, was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Cranfill is a school bus driver for Cleveland Independent School District and formerly drove a bus for Conroe ISD.

According to MCSO Special Victims Unit detectives, preliminary investigations indicate the sexual assault was “in no way connected to Mr. Cranfill’s current or former role as a school bus driver.”

Cleveland ISD spokeswoman Tonya Clark told Texas Scorecard that Cranfill was hired by Cleveland ISD on October 25, 2022.

“At this time, we do not have any additional updates on his employment status, as this matter remains under active investigation,” stated Clark.

“Cleveland ISD is fully cooperating with law enforcement and will continue to follow all legal and personnel protocols,” she added. “The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and the district will take all appropriate actions as more information becomes available.”

Cranfill was arrested and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on November 27. Bond is set at $75,000.

In just the past few years, hundreds of Texas school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other minors.
