U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt accused a local news station of comparing Republican school board members’ actions to those of the Nazis.
The video by NBC affiliate KPRC 2 shows an on-air personality ripping pages from a book interspersed with old footage of Nazis burning books in a bonfire.
“Book banning in one form or another goes back a long time. And now it’s fashionable again, at least in some of our school districts. Cy-Fair ISD [Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District] is doing it a little differently,” said the video’s narrator.
The video goes on to compare Cy-Fair ISD’s removal of individual chapters from books regarding DEI, climate change, and vaccines to the book burnings.
Hunt, a Republican from Houston, told Texas Scorecard that “using Nazi imagery to smear Republican school board members isn’t just irresponsible, it’s disgusting.”
“It’s gross editorializing disguised as news, and it’s an insult to those who actually suffered under the horrors of that fascist regime,” he added.
Every local school district is allowed to choose the curriculum it uses.
Last year, Cy-Fair ISD reviewed its curriculum and removed chapters that were politically charged.
In the May 6, 2024, Cy-Fair ISD board meeting, Trustee Natalie Blasingame made an approved motion to remove the following chapters from the approved curriculum:
- Investigations 13 and 16 omitted, Miller & Levine Experience Biology, Savvas Learning Company Texas.
- Chapters 5 and 7 omitted, Environmental Science: Sustaining Your World, Texas Edition, Cengage Learning Inc.
- Chapters 2, 6, and 21 omitted, Earth Systems, Texas Edition, Cengage Learning Inc.
- Chapters 7, 12, 15, and 18 omitted, Teaching, Goodheart-Willcox Company.
- Chapters 8 and 10 omitted, DHO Health Science, Cengage Learning Inc.
“That happened a while back, so I’m interested in why now?” Blasingame asked a reporter in the KPRC 2 clip when they approached her for comment.
“Parents, if you don’t want your kids to be taught there are 64 genders and boys can be in girls locker rooms @KPRC2 thinks you’re a Nazi book burner,” wrote State Rep. Steve Toth (R-Conroe) in response to the video.
“The election is in November, yet 10 months out, KPRC 2 conveniently decides to dredge up an event from last year. This isn’t journalism—it’s political theater,” said Hunt.
“As a Black Republican, I’ve seen firsthand how left-wing commentators, so-called journalists, and activists weaponize identity and ideology to attack those who don’t conform. I won’t stay silent while a Houston news station does the same to my friends and neighbors in Congressional District 38,” he continued.
This hit piece isn’t about informing the public—it’s about shaping a political narrative ahead of the election. KPRC 2 should immediately correct their story and give equal time to the board members and educators they slandered with their reckless reporting.
Mom’s for America Texas State Director Teresa Thomas told Texas Scorecard the KPRC 2 video did not shock her.
“Unfortunately, it is not surprising to see this news station attacking the CFISD school board. It seems to show signs of political warfare against community values,” said Thomas. “These dedicated trustees demonstrate their courage and commitment to the students and community by putting forth policies and practices free of woke ideological theories, that support getting back to the basics of educating 118,000 children of CFISD.”
We are thankful they are putting themselves on the front lines, taking the arrows and unwarranted attacks to protect the hearts and minds of the children of the third-largest school district in Texas. They are an example to all trustees across the state for their sacrifices and we applaud them for continuing to fight for students. The media may continue to interfere with the upcoming board elections with biased reporting but the stakeholders of CFISD are awake and activated to set the record straight.
Texas Scorecard contacted Cy-Fair ISD board members for comment regarding the KPRC 2 story but did not receive a response by publication.
