As Republicans from across Texas prepare to gather in Houston in the coming days for the Republican Party of Texas convention, activists are urging delegates to adopt new pro-life priorities while others fight to preserve the party’s existing “Abolish Abortion” plank.
Several pro-life organizations are urging delegates to adopt resolutions and platform priorities aimed at further advancing protections for unborn children, increasing support for mothers, and combating the distribution of abortion-inducing drugs.
One proposal being pushed by Texas Alliance for Life is already generating debate, as it would replace the Texas GOP’s current “Abolish Abortion” platform plank with language supporting the state’s Thriving Texas Families program.
The existing plank calls on lawmakers to “abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilization.”
The proposed replacement instead focuses on maintaining or increasing funding for pregnancy resource centers, adoption services, and maternity homes.
The proposal has drawn criticism from some activists who argue the current language should remain in the party platform.
In a social media post, State Rep. Brent Money of Greenville, who authored abortion abolition legislation during the most recent legislative session, accused Texas Alliance for Life of attempting to “significantly weaken the Republican Party of Texas’ pro-life platform.”
Pro-life activist Abby Johnson previously accused TAL of pressuring a committee chairman to deny a hearing for Money’s 2025 abortion abolition legislation.
Now, Money specifically objected to TAL’s proposal to replace the “Abolish Abortion” plank, writing that the current language “supports equal protection for preborn children and urges the Legislature to abolish abortion.”
He also argued that replacing the plank would remove language that has long reflected the party’s commitment to extending legal protections to unborn children.
Abolish Abortion Texas has similarly urged delegates to reject the proposed change and preserve the existing platform language.
Texas Alliance for Life has criticized the current language, arguing it would “subject vulnerable women to life in prison or even the death penalty.”
Meanwhile, Texas Right to Life is promoting a series of resolutions ahead of the convention that would make protection of unborn children a legislative priority, oppose the distribution of abortion-inducing drugs, encourage adoption as an alternative to abortion, and strengthen protections for vulnerable patients.
“With renewed attacks on preborn babies, Texas conservatives must recommit to making the protection of innocent human life the Party’s top priority,” TRL stated.
Committee meetings will take place over the next week in Houston, with delegates expected to approve final language on Saturday.
