A veteran Democrat lawmaker has confirmed that Dustin Burrows intends to continue “traditions of bipartisanship” in the Texas House.

Burrows, who is currently attempting a run for speaker of the House despite losing the Republican nomination for the position over the weekend, has been courting Democrats to win the seat.

According to a constituent email that was posted to social media, 10-term State Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin) has offered a “preliminary endorsement” to Burrows. Howard’s name had previously appeared on a list of supporters released by Burrows.

According to the email, which was written by Howard’s legislative director, “Rep. Howard is proud of the legislature’s longstanding tradition of allowing members of the minority party to hold chairmanships.” Furthermore, “this allows for greater representation for all diverse communities that make up our great state.”

Meanwhile, Republican voters have demanded that House leadership end the practice of awarding powerful committee chair positions to Democrats.

State Rep. David Cook (R-Mansfield), the chosen nominee for speaker as decided by the Republican caucus last weekend, has promised to end the practice.

Burrows initially claimed a list of 76 supporters on Saturday. That number has subsequently withered.

The final vote for speaker will take place on January 14.
