AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Governor Rick Perry today issued an emergency declaration on the issue of tax relief.

The president of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, Michael Quinn Sullivan, said lawmakers should view tax relief as their highest priority this session.

“Texas taxpayers are going to be closely watching to see which legislators are using the surplus to offer true tax relief, and which ones are more concerned with spending the taxpayers’ hard-earned money. The people of Texas deserve to get their money back. They deserve to see their tax rates reduced.”

Sullivan added: “If we are to see the Texas’ economy continue to grow and prosper, we must return to taxpayers those funds which exceed the reasonable cost of government.”

Tax relief could be offered in a variety of ways with the surplus, including further buy-downs of the local property tax rates, or by reducing or eliminating the new state margins tax.
