State Sen. Carlos Uresti (D-San Antonio) has spent much of his 2018 not working on legislation, but rather in the court room.
Uresti was featured in the Daily Beast’s bombshell report, along with State Sen. Borris Miles (D-Houston), after they were accused of sexually assaulting female staffers working in the state capitol.
However, the ball didn’t stop rolling there for Uresti. He is now on trial for defrauding multiple investors in a company he was deeply involved in, FourWinds Logistics. Prosecutors now say the company was nothing but a front for a Ponzi scheme. Uresti’s offices were raided by the FBI in May of 2017, and he now faces 11 felony charges, claiming to have been unaware of FourWinds’ business dealings.
One of the witnesses set to testify against Uresti was allegedly a former mistress of his, who accused Uresti of both having an affair with her and defrauding her of $900,000.
If Uresti is found guilty, he will not be representing his district in the Legislature in 2019, but will instead be spending time behind bars. The trial is expected to end before March.
The fraud trial and extramarital affairs are not Uresti’s first brushes with immorality. Uresti was also accused of assaulting his ex-wife, and was caught on video exiting a bathroom with a female lobbyist during the 84th Legislative Session in 2015.
Throughout all of this, no elected Texas Democrat official has called for Uresti to step down, neither has the Texas Democratic Party. Uresti is not up for reelection in 2018.
