“Governor Abbott continues to keep his boot on the neck of every Texan, and our economy, even as the costs mount and the benefits diminish.”
As countless Texans continue struggling to make ends meet under the governor’s shutdowns, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller wrote a scathing open letter on Friday to Gov. Greg Abbott, admonishing him to open the state.
“Did you know that most violence and sexual abuse of children is self-reported to or recognized by teachers and other school personnel? Did you know that isolation leads to increased alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, divorce, and suicide?” wrote Miller. “Apparently our governor doesn’t.”
“This isn’t May. We know far more about this disease than we did then,” he continued. “We have better treatments and therapeutics, along with plenty of hospital capacity. This has resulted in plummeting fatality rates.”
“We also know that schools AREN’T ‘super-spreaders,’ as many feared. In fact, coronavirus transmission rates in schools are tiny for students and adults alike.”
“It is time to STOP THE INSANITY!” Miller added. “There is simply no logic to continuing to crush the liberties of the free people of Texas for the sake of fear and politics.”
In recent weeks, Miller has actively opposed Abbott and his autocratic executive orders.
The agriculture commissioner spoke at a recent protest at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin, demanding Abbott allow Texans to provide for their families. He also joined a recent lawsuit alongside Republican Party of Texas Chairman Allen West and other prominent Republicans against Abbott’s extension of early voting.
“Governor, your cure is worse than the disease,” Miller’s letter concluded. “End the lockdown IMMEDIATELY.”
