Just days after a series of Republican-backed resolutions faced roadblocks, the Texas House on Tuesday swiftly suspended the rules to pass a resolution recognizing the League of Women Voters of Collin County—a group with a history of opposing voter integrity measures in Texas.
House Resolution 334, filed by Democrat State Rep. Mihaela Plesa (Dallas), honored the organization, which claims to be nonpartisan but has consistently opposed election security laws, including voter ID requirements.
The League’s Texas president, Joyce LeBombard, boasts of creating the group’s first Equity & Inclusion Director and program. The record vote on the resolution was requested by State Rep. David Lowe (R–North Richland Hills).
The final vote count was 98 in favor, 28 against.
The House’s willingness to bend the rules for this resolution follows closely on the heels of another controversial decision: blocking a resolution memorializing the late Jill Glover, a conservative activist and former member of the State Republican Executive Committee.
Despite similar resolutions being approved regularly, sources say State Rep. Jared Patterson (R–Frisco), chair of the Local and Consent Calendar Committee, refused to allow the tribute to move forward.
Additionally, State Rep. Shelley Luther (R–Sherman) had prepared a resolution to honor the hospital which saved her life after she experienced a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 2023. Patterson limited Luther to an informal recognition, while a Democrat lawmaker was permitted to pass a formal resolution for the same hospital system.
The vote, as well as subsequent journal statements from those wishing to change their record, is below.
