When running for office, one should surround themselves with winners, not losers. And if running as a conservative, one should tout endorsements from conservatives.

But don’t tell Texas House District 33 candidate Lorne Liechty, who is touting an endorsement from a failed state senator who tried to silence the state’s largest pro-life group.

Former State Sen. Bob Deuell was defeated two years ago in the GOP primary by conservative Taxpayer Champion Bob Hall. In that race, Deuell tried to silence Texas Right to Life by threatening action against radio stations airing their ads. Deuell was widely considered to be one of the least conservative members of the senate’s Republican caucus.

Fast forward to 2016, and Mr. Liechty is bragging about Duel’s support. Reportedly, Deuell called Liechty a “smart and principled” conservative. Considering just how off the mark Deuell’s record was in the Texas Senate, one can only imagine how he defines “smart” and “principled.”
