Today’s ruling by the US Supreme Court is nothing less than shameful, pushing the United States further down the bankrupting road to serfdom that has been sadly trod to the ruin of Europe. If nothing else, this tragic ruling should remind us of the importance of electing right-thinking men and women at all levels of government, in every election, to stop bad legislation before it can go to the courts.

With the misguided blessing of a split Court, the Obama Administration was handed a win – and the American people a big loss.

What was originally billed by the president as a mandate and not a tax, has been upheld by the Court as a tax and not a mandate. In a 2009 interview with ABC News, President Obama “absolutely” rejected the idea his legislation was a tax, forcefully arguing that it was a mandate.

Of course, Obama once promised not to tax the middle class, but this ruling makes it clear ObamaCare represents possibly the largest tax increase in American history.

This creates a scary new tax scheme. If Congress can tax us for not purchasing something, the sky’s the limit for what special interests’ will now want the tax code to require us to buy.

The focus of our national elections must now be on the repeal of ObamaCare – not reform. And at all levels of government, from the court house to the state house, we need right-thinking men and women who reject big-government nannyism, and respect individual liberty and personal responsibility.
